Overview Physiotherapy program in Accra, Ghana
In the physiotherapy program, you will contribute to an important field of community and sports development in Accra. In participation, you will support the children’s educational perspectives and promote cultural exchange. Additionally, you support local sport organizations in their work. The program provides the practical help and care that is usually unavailable for many injured locals and athletes.
Participation is a great experience for your future career as a professional physiotherapist! The physiotherapy program will develop a comprehensive understanding of the challenges many physiotherapists and medical professionals in developing countries have to take up.
What to expect
Description Physiotherapy program in Accra, Ghana
As a (future) physiotherapist, you will support local sport organizations. Together with other physiotherapists and trainees from Ghana, you provide hands-on assistance and take care of the patient’s physical complaints every day. Your tasks may vary according to your qualifications and level of experience. Although there is still a long way to go before the institutions meet all needs of the local population, they are constantly evolving and integrating modern methods into their concept.
Daily routine
After your arrival, the introduction will take place on the first Monday.
Mondays to Fridays:
- Breakfast
- Physical therapies

- Dinner
The daily routine might vary, depending on local conditions, the weather or unpredictable circumstances.
Requirements
- Duration: at least 4 weeks
- Minimum age: 18 years
- Language skills: basic English
- Qualification: qualified physiotherapist & students enrolled at an educational institution (3rd year of study)
- Obligation: yellow fever vaccination (proof upon entry of Ghana)
- Own initiative & highly motivated person
- Ability to deal with long, labor-intensive and difficult days

The project is available all year round – you can start in your favorite week!
Arrival
Volunteers are requested to arrive on Sundays at Kotaka International Airport. Between 9am and 6pm, our partner organization will provide a personal pick-up at the airport and drop you to your accommodation safely. The ride takes approximately 30 minutes. If you arrive on Saturdays or Weekdays, the pick-up must be either self-organized or extra paid. At the airport, currency can be changed and the driver helps you to get a cheap, local sim card for your mobile phone.
Introduction day
After your arrival, the first Monday is an introduction day. Together with other volunteers, you will be joining various activities that will support orientation in Accra and will help you understand the Ghanaian culture and its traditions.
Start your Project
After introduction day, you start participating in your project on Tuesday. The way to work is short – your accommodation is not far away from your workplace. You simply walk or use the public transport such as shared taxis or the Tro Tro, a cheap and most commonly used vehicle in Ghana. At work, you will be introduced and immediately included in the daily routine.
The weekend
The weekend is yours! Consult your program coordinator in Ghana for excursions, activities, shopping tips or other must see’s in Accra and its surrounding areas. You can plan amazing trips and make your time as diversified as possible.
Departure
Friday is always your last day in the project. You have time to check out until lunch on Saturday (12 o’clock), if you are not attending the next week. Please consult our partner organization and inform yourself about the possibilities to get a transfer to the airport. This is not included, but they will provide help with its organization.

Your accommodation
Accommodation during your Community Engagement in Ghana
Together with other participants you will stay in Teshie, a coastal suburb of Accra. Thanks to the central location, it is not far away from your workplace. Teshie has its own train station from where you can go anywhere. After a 10 minutes drive you are directly at the beach! And besides, the suburb with its cultural diversity has a lot to offer.
Furniture & Fittings
The traditional houses consist of several shared rooms with bunk beds. The bathroom has to be shared with other participants. The meals, as well as drinking water, coffee and tea is provided. You can easily keep in touch with your family and friends at home – free WIFI is available in the common areas.
Meals
At the property there are three meals a day. The food is a good mix of Western and Ghanaian dishes. Traditionally this includes rice dishes, beans, fruits, many vegetables, chicken, beef and fish. On Saturday and Sunday, only breakfast and dinner are served.
