About this position

Would you like to become part of an initiative that sustainably improves the quality of life of the people in Hidalgo? You and the local coordinators will help manage and holistically solve environmental conflicts in Mexico. In this way, you will increase the quality of life and help to counteract the ongoing marginalization.

Environmental protection and community empowerment

All of our programs in Mexico focus on social and environmental conflict management and change. They  are a perfect initiative for volunteers who want to contribute to social change and conservation. Immerse yourself in an exciting culture and develop social conflict management skills while improving and strengthening your communication skills.

The program

Our local partner has established a collaboration with a local grassroots NGO.This NGO was founded in 2003 to sustainably improve the living conditions of marginalized groups in the state of Hidalgo through participatory cultural and productive education and development processes. The goal is to promote a change in social consciousness for the common good based on human rights, local resources, and sustainability. In doing so, the essential aspects of the traditional Hña Hña culture are to be respected and newly integrated. Also, various conservation activities are promoted locally and volunteers contribute daily to social development and conservation of nature and culture. For all our volunteers, participating in this initiative will be a life-changing experience!

Itinerary of your stay abroad

Project start

The projects run throughout the year. Therefore, the time of your start is flexible. We coordinate it individually with the organisation and you.

Time of arrival

It is always very convenient to arrive a few days before the start of the project. This way you avoid stress and working with jet lag. As soon as our local partner has your travel details, they will arrange your accommodation and you can move in with a host family up to three days before the start of the project at no extra cost. You will then have enough time to recover from your journey and make your first excursions to get to know your surroundings. You can acclimatise in peace and get to know your host family and the country and its people.

Arrival at the local airport

For our projects in Malinalco, Mezquital Valley and Chalma, we recommend Mexico City International Airport as your arrival airport. From there, our partner will organise your airport pick-up and transport to your accommodation. The details can also be arranged with our local partner. Once you arrive at the project location, we recommend that you first recover from the long flight. Take the time you need to let all the impressions sink in and get over the jet lag, and if you cannot find a flight on the desired date, it is advisable to arrive a day earlier than planned.

Orientation on site

To avoid a culture shock, you will receive a cultural briefing from your local contact either directly after your arrival or before your first day of work. You will be informed about the country and its people, cultural particularities and important do's and don'ts. You will also receive insider tips to help you get started in a new lifestyle. It will also make it easier for you to communicate with the locals. Incidentally, your volunteering programme includes a language course, which will also help you settle in.

The working day begins

On the first day of your project, you will usually be accompanied by a member of staff from our local partner, who will show you around and answer any initial questions you may have. On all subsequent project days, your local contact person will always be available to you by telephone.

On the weekend

The weekend is generally yours. Simply ask your local contact person about events, sights, shopping tips or other must-sees. In some cases, our partner will also organise excursions for all volunteers, which you can of course take part in. They also offer adventure packages. Simply ask him on site what you would like to do. Otherwise, you can plan excursions to the surrounding area individually and organise your free time in a colourful way.

Departure

Before your last day of work, you should contact your local contact person and find out the times of your airport drop-off.

Your accommodation

In Mexico, you will either live in a shared flat with other volunteers or with a host family.

The shared flats are located in well-equipped houses. Don't worry: there is electricity, 'normal' toilets, fully equipped bathrooms, a communal kitchen and a dining area where you can sit together. You will have to cater for yourselves here.

You can also stay with a host family. The perfect way to enjoy authentic life in Mexico! There you will be provided with your own, simply furnished room and you will receive two meals, which you will eat together with the family. You will become part of the family and get to know their everyday life. You will gain a direct insight into their culture and society and can practise and improve a foreign language from day to day. All host families are of course carefully and carefully selected. They usually already have experience with foreign volunteers.

Choose between accommodation with a host family or in a shared house. As prices vary, you will need to indicate your preference when you register so that your accommodation can be reserved for you.
