About this position

Overview Sports training at schools in Esparza, Costa Rica

If the budget is tight, the first subject Costa Rica’s schools will cut is sports training and physical education. Especially in rural areas like Esparza, schools are not well-funded and children often have various responsibilities outside of school. Therefore the project offers them the chance to continue practicing sports in an organized environment. The local community and educational institutions support the project. That is why there are various and flexible ways to get involved!

What to expect

Description Sports training at schools in Esparza, Costa Rica

In the project, you work with students of different ages (5-19 years old). You are going to organize various games and physical activities to create a great sports program at school. Depending on your language skills, you can teach them either in English or Spanish. Which sports you can offer? At this point you are flexible! It is important to understand that the sports and teaching methods are not as important as your general attitude towards sports and community work. In addition to physical education, you can also participate in other activities organized at school.

During your stay, you will get an insight into Costa Rica’s education system and at the same time experience other cultures. Feel free to find your individual role in the community!

Equipment

At the school you wear casual clothes, short beach fashion is prohibited. In addition, you need functional sportswear for the training sessions. You are welcomed to bring your equipment from home and some things you want to use in class (e.g. skipping rope, skittles, balls) with you. It also makes sense to pack older clothes if you are going to participate in one of the other school projects like renovation, arts weeks, etc.

Daily routine

In some schools, your schedule is very flexible. Often you can decide which age group you would like to train during the week. You spend the entire day at school (8am - 4.30pm), teach the children for about 3 to 6 hours and in between have lunch together. In doing so, you will be fully integrated into school life. There is enough time to get to know the school and immerse yourself in the activities. Between your physical training lessons, you can reflect upon your own experiences and improve your courses!

The exact daily routine varies depending on local conditions, weather and unpredictable circumstances.

Your tasks

  • Planning, organizing and conducting sports courses
  • Creative design of school lessons
  • Reflection and revision of training plans
  • Participation in school festivals and projects (e.g. environmental protection)
  • Community commitment

Requirements:

  • Minimum age: 18 years
  • Language skills: basic English
  • Physical health and fitness
  • Empathy
  • Organizational skills
  • Ability to guide others
