Paid Internships in The USA

An internship in the USA cannot be planned overnight, especially financially. In addition to the rather expensive flight, there are also the costs for the J-1 visa and the living expenses. The room rent can cost up to 900 Euro per month even outside the big cities. If the internship is paid in the USA, one can at least cover a large part of the living costs here. However, most companies only offer payment after an internship of 6 months. Internships of 3 to 6 months are not paid, but in some cases, food and transportation during the work are covered.

In general, the longer the internship, the higher the payment.

Paid Internships in The UK

England is another good destination if you would like to keep your options open for a paid internship abroad; London to be precise, especially in the field of marketing and customer service- paid internships are mostly available.

The good news is that you can expect a paid internship in London for 2 or 3 months duration; and during these rather short internships, some companies even include subsidies for food, transportation, or accommodation. But those who expect a salary starting from approximately 300 euros per month should also plan an internship in London with a duration of at least 4 months. Many companies also differentiate depending on the qualification of the intern, if and how much an additional remuneration will be.

Whether it be paid or not, you can also apply for EURASMUS+ or SEMP for an internship in London. EURASMUS monthly funding for students from Europe amounts to 555 euros.

Why are Paid Internships Only Available for the 5 - 6 Months Duration?

Whether Spain, USA or England: From experience we can say that internships abroad are usually only paid upwards from 6 months. Why is that so? Imagine a company accepts you as an intern for 4 weeks. During these 4 weeks, you can get an insight into the work processes and above all, you have to learn to deal with the culture in the host country. The company will train you and try to let you participate in all processes as much as possible. For this purpose, the company must provide an internship supervisor and contact person - paid staff, which means costs for the company. So the value the company offers you is much higher than what you can bring in as a short-term intern.

Unpaid Internships Abroad in Many Countries

Firstly, other countries do not have a statutory minimum wage for interns. It is also often not common practice to pay interns. On the other hand, visa and immigration regulations often only allow paid work with a work visa, which often differs from the internship visa. Such countries are for example Indonesia or Singapore.
