About this position

Overview: volunteer in a pre-school and primary school in Bali

The government provides educational opportunities for a cost. Families must pay for use of the building, books and school supplies, uniforms, transportation, and food. Many families must choose between sending their children to school and feeding themselves.  This NGO pre-school creates educational opportunities for children with educational needs in developing areas through sponsorships by a private Christian primary school and their fund-raising efforts. The primary focus or the foundation is to support children in Bali whose family could not afford early education. As a volunteer teacher you will support both the primary and NGO school through assisting the teacher during English lessons.

What to expect

Description: volunteer in a pre-school in Indonesia

Volunteer will assist the teachers in both the private Christian primary school and the non-profit pre-school. You will work in shifts:
  • Monday to Friday
  • teaching at the primary school from 8 am to 11 am
  • teaching at the pre-school from 11.30 am to 2 pm
Your Tasks:
  • Supporting, assisting and co-teaching the teacher, depending on which class is in need of support and depending as well on your special skills.
  • Assist their programs of basically include tutoring children, assisting them to learn mainly language (Playful English teaching method, by combining singing, reading, playing, drawing, flash cards and so forth)
Prerequisites:
  • fluent in English
  • Volunteers need to prepare a teaching and activity plan, containing ideas of what they would like to teach or play during classes
  • No visible tattoes and piercings.

Start date of project

The projects starts on every Monday.

Time of arrival

We recommend to arrange an arrival from Tuesday to Thursday, that you have the chance to join the orientation day, which is always scheduled on Friday. You then have enough time to recover from the long flight, get to know your roommates and make your first trips.

Arrival at the Airport

Arriving in a new country is always exciting. We want your arrival to be as relaxed as possible. One of the staff members of our partner organization will pick you up at the airport and bring you to your host family or your shared flat. He/she will be waiting for you at the airport with a sign with your name on it.

Orientation program

Friday after your arrival one of the team members of our partner organisation will visit you in your accommodation and show you around. You will get to know the location and its people and you will be informed about Do’s and Don'ts. The program will be held with more volunteers at the same time. This is the perfect opportunity to get to know like-minded globetrotters. Your local contact person will provide you with further useful hints for a good starting point into a new lifestyle.

The project starts

On the first day of your project (Monday), you are accompanied by a team member of the local partner and will be introduced to your project. The next days, your contact person will always be reachable through phone and will assist you with any occurring problems.

Free time & weekend

The weekend is totally yours! You may ask your local contact person from our partner organisation about upcoming events, sights, shopping tips or other must see’s. On some days there will be field trips organized by our partner organization. We recommend you to join them as it is always fun to experience a new country with others. 

Departure

You shall contact your local contact person a few days prior to your departure to inform about options for your airport drop-off. It will not be included in the services of the volunteer projects, but our expert will help you organize it.

Your accommodation

Volunteer accommodation in Bali

Volunteers participating in projects located in Kerobokan and Canggu area can choose to live in the volunteer house in Sanur or in a private accommodation in Kerobokan. Volunteer house in Sanur The volunteer house is a 30 min scooter ride from the projects in Canggu/Kerobokan. You will live in a shared room among other volunteers. Private accommodation in Kerobokan If you don't feel comfortable to drive we would recommend you to stay in a private accommodation in a homestay complex (no guest families!). Every volunteer will receive a separate and private room with basic equipment: bed, shelf, aircon, own bathroom, wifi) and access to a pool. However, equipment does not include fridge and there is no kitchen. Meals are not included in both options and have to be provided by each volunteer.

Your coordinator in Bali, Indonesia

All internship and volunteer programs in Bali are coordinated by Laura and Rima. Laura was born in Surabaya, Java, and moved to Bali several years ago to finish her English Literature Master in Cultural studies. Rima, joined the team after returning home from from her 4-year stay in Germany.  The young and energetic team will assist you during your travel preparations and during your entire stay on the island. Moreover, they regularly organise meetings with all interns and volunteers and are happy to share insider tips, that will make your stay unique and unforgettable.
