CATEGORY: Internship abroad - Child care
COUNTRY: Indonesia (Bali)
READING TIME: 3 minutes
Vanessa, a social work student, took the leap and spent two months in Bali for her internship. In her experience report, she shares how she stepped out of her comfort zone, bonded with the children at the orphanage, and embraced the beauty of Balinese culture. From beach days to crafting sessions, and from yoga classes to breathtaking sunsets—her time in Bali was nothing short of a dream.
I am training to become a Dipl. Social Worker for Family Support and, as part of this training, I had the opportunity to do an internship abroad. I was advised by an organization and quickly knew that I wanted to make this trip and take the chance to spend 2 months in another country. Since my boyfriend accompanied me, I felt very secure in this decision. Nevertheless, it was a step out of my comfort zone, as I had never been away from home for such a long time and such a long distance. However, I must say that I don't regret having taken this adventure at all.
My internship in Bali, Indonesia
When we arrived, I had an introduction at the orphanage from the responsible person, and I was warmly welcomed by the mother and another intern from Germany. When the children came home from school, they greeted me very nicely as well. I immediately felt comfortable and welcomed like part of the family. I worked Monday through Friday either in the morning or in the afternoon. I did housework, such as tidying up, washing clothes, doing dishes, mopping the floor when the children were not there, but also crafting, playing, and painting when the children were present. A highlight was, for example, when we had a beach day. It was very beautiful, or when we made pizza together. Another wonderful surprise was that a new baby was admitted to the orphanage. It was heartwarming to see how the children welcomed it and wanted to care for the baby.
Everyday life in Bali
Outside of the internship hours, my boyfriend and I spent time at the beach, explored the area, and found many great restaurants. We were in Ubud and visited the Monkey Forest and also made rings. In another city, we went surfing and watched the most beautiful sunsets. We also took yoga classes and, of course, enjoyed the Balinese massage very often. It was truly a dream time. When I think back, I sometimes believe I only dreamt all of this. I am incredibly grateful for this experience and would do it again in a heartbeat.
