COUNTRY: Indonesia (Bali)
READING TIME: 3 minutes
Vanessa, a social work student, took the leap and spent two months in Bali for her internship. In her experience report, she shares how she stepped out of her comfort zone, bonded with the children at the orphanage, and embraced the beauty of Balinese culture. From beach days to crafting sessions, and from yoga classes to breathtaking sunsets—her time in Bali was nothing short of a dream.
I am training to become a diploma-certified social care worker for family assistance and had the opportunity to complete an internship abroad as part of this training. Through StudentsGoAbroad, I received guidance and quickly realized that I wanted to take this journey and seize the opportunity to spend two months in another country. Since my boyfriend accompanied me, I felt very secure in my decision. It was a step out of my comfort zone, as I had never been away from home for so long and so far. But I must say, I do not regret for a second taking on this adventure.
My internship in Bali, Indonesia
When we arrived and I received an introduction at the orphanage on Monday, I was warmly welcomed by the mother of the house and the other intern from Germany. When the children returned from school, they also greeted me very kindly. I immediately felt comfortable and welcomed like part of a family.
I worked from Monday to Friday, either in the mornings or afternoons. My tasks included household chores such as tidying up, doing laundry, washing dishes, and mopping the floor when the children were not around. When the children were present, we did arts and crafts, played games, and painted together. A special highlight was our Beach Day – it was a wonderful experience. Another great moment was when we baked pizza together. A particularly touching surprise was the arrival of a new baby at the orphanage. It was heartwarming to see how lovingly the children welcomed the baby and wanted to take care of it.
Everyday life in Bali
Outside of my internship hours, my boyfriend and I spent a lot of time at the beach, explored the area, and discovered many great restaurants. We visited Ubud, saw the Monkey Forest, and forged rings. In Kuta, we went surfing and admired breathtaking sunsets. We attended yoga classes and frequently enjoyed traditional Balinese massages. It was simply a dreamlike experience. When I look back, I sometimes feel like I must have dreamed it all. I am incredibly grateful for having had this experience and would do it all over again in a heartbeat.
