My Week in Bali – Insights into Our Programs and Experiences with Our Local Partners
CATEGORY: SGA Staff Report
COUNTRY: Indonesia
READING TIME: 6 minutes
For the past 15 years, Katha has been your main point of contact at SGA, helping students and volunteers find the perfect program abroad. Last week, she had the opportunity to visit our projects and partners in Bali – a trip full of impressive experiences, beautiful landscapes, and inspiring encounters.
I had the chance to get to know Bali many years ago, and it remains a magical island. For me, it’s one of the most beautiful places in the world, always fascinating with its unique atmosphere and nature.

The North of Bali
A special highlight of my trip was visiting the north of Bali, in Pemuteran. This region is much quieter and more authentic than the busy south. There, I visited our coral restoration program, where volunteers actively contribute to the protection and restoration of coral reefs. Being there, I was reminded once again of how essential this work is – not just for the environment, but also for the local communities that rely on a healthy ecosystem. If you'd like to learn more about this project, you can find more information here.

Insights into Balinese Culture
I also had the opportunity to take part in a Cultural Workshop, which offers students a fascinating introduction to Balinese culture. We visited a traditional Balinese house to learn more about its architecture and spiritual significance. Additionally, we learned how the daily offerings, which play a central role in Balinese religion and culture, are made. This experience helps participants better understand local traditions and eases their adjustment to daily life in Bali.
Culinary Experiences
Another highlight was the food in Bali! I was especially taken by the dragon fruit and the fresh coconuts – incredibly delicious, and tempeh was also a treat, a traditional Balinese dish made from fermented soybeans that is both healthy and tasty.
Breathtaking Sunsets
Then there were the sunsets – a true natural wonder! The colors of the sky and the sea created unforgettable moments. Every evening, we could end the day with a beautiful view of the sunset.
Conclusion
This trip once again showed me how valuable our programs are – both for our participants and for the local partners. It was especially wonderful to spend time with our fantastic partners Laura and Rima, who passionately manage our projects on the ground.
