Internship in Miami: Lisa’s Event Management Experience at an Art Museum

Lisa spent several months in Miami Beach completing an internship in the Special Events Department of an art museum. During her time there, she gained hands-on experience in event planning, marketing, research, and administration. In her internship report, Lisa shares what working in the U.S. was like and why life in Miami became such a memorable experience beyond the workplace.
During my time abroad, I had the opportunity to complete a multi-month internship in the Special Events Department of an art museum in Miami Beach. This allowed me not only to gain initial work experience in the USA, but also to get a good insight into the daily operations of a museum.
My life as an intern in the U.S.
My tasks were quite varied and lay mainly in the areas of event planning, marketing, research, and administration. A large part of my work consisted of research for future events and projects. For example, I searched for suitable target audiences, communities, and potential cooperation partners. I found it fascinating to see how much planning and preparation actually goes into an event before it can even be carried out.
I was also able to work on various tasks in the marketing area. Among other things, I reworked a landing page for the website. The goal here was to make the page more appealing to potential clients and to better showcase the museum's event spaces. I also supported blog posts and other content.
Another major part of my internship was the planning and execution of events. The museum regularly hosts various events, for example with artists, curators, or external partners. For larger events, I helped with preparation and organization, communicated with various vendors, and supported the team on-site during the event. The main focus here was making sure everything was prepared on time and that things ran as smoothly as possible.

I also got some insight into exhibition planning. I partly contributed to initial ideas and drafts, which gave me a better understanding of everything that needs to be considered when planning an exhibition. Of course, there were also classic administrative tasks, such as maintaining data, working with Excel spreadsheets, or supporting financial overviews.
During the internship, I learned above all to work more independently and in a more organized way. Since several tasks and projects often ran at the same time, I had to learn to set priorities and keep track of deadlines. At the same time, I was able to improve my skills in event planning, marketing research, and professional communication. I particularly enjoyed working with the team, since I always got support when I had questions and was able to settle into the daily routine quickly.
Exploring Miami and beyond
Outside of the internship as well, I really enjoyed my time in Miami. Since the museum is located directly in Miami Beach, I especially loved spending my lunch breaks on the beach, which was definitely one of the highlights. In my free time, I was out and about a lot with friends — we discovered various parts of Miami, went shopping, or had meals together. During that time, I lived in a shared apartment, which helped me quickly find connections with other people. We often cooked together or did spontaneous things. In general, I'd say that living in a shared apartment is a good way to meet new people, especially at the beginning. My tip would therefore be to stay open-minded and to do and discover as much as possible. Miami has very different areas, and it's definitely worth it not to stay only in Miami Beach.
Overall, my internship in Miami was a very positive experience. What I liked most was how varied my tasks were, allowing me to work on both creative and organizational projects. It was also interesting to experience the daily work routine in the USA and to gain experience in an international environment. I definitely took a lot away from this time and, looking back, would choose to do an internship abroad again.
