For Sandip, a spontaneous decision during her Work and Travel stay turned into an unforgettable internship in Sydney. In her internship report, she shares how she overcame her initial worries about costs, language, and work culture — and what advice she would give to future interns.

Australia had been at the very top of my wish list ever since I finished high school. Before starting my internship, I had already spent two months in Australia doing Work and Travel. I liked it so much that I spontaneously decided to complete my required internship in Sydney as well.

However, finding an internship locally turned out to be very difficult. On top of that, I had other concerns and questions: I knew that Sydney had a reputation for being very expensive, so I wondered what the real cost of living would actually be and how much budget I would need to plan. I was also worried about whether my English would be good enough for a professional work environment and how different Australian work culture would be from German work culture.

Structured Preparation and Support from SGA

Since finding an internship at first proved difficult, I started researching placement agencies and came across StudentsGoAbroad. During a non-binding and personal consultation, I was able to openly share my wishes and expectations.

My Work Routine and the Lifestyle in Australia

My initial concerns about the language and work culture quickly disappeared. The work culture in Australia is noticeably more relaxed than in Germany. There are very flat hierarchies, and people interact with each other on an equal level, while still working very professionally.

My English was not a problem in everyday work either, as I was able to improve it very quickly. What influenced me most was the Australian work-life balance. It is completely normal to get up early before work to exercise or enjoy nature. After work, I often did something with colleagues or friends as well. This relaxed mentality makes working and living in Australia especially enjoyable.

My Advice for Future German Participants

Find out early about scholarships and funding opportunities. Many students do not know that financial support for internships abroad is available. In my case, I was able to finance my stay through a DAAD scholarship.
Plan a financial buffer. Sydney has endless things to offer, but it is not a cheap city. It is better to plan a little extra budget so you can enjoy your time without worrying too much and also travel, because Australia has so many beautiful places to discover.
Use your weekends for trips. Make the most of every free moment to explore the surrounding area, such as visiting the Blue Mountains or the white sandy beaches of Jervis Bay.

For me, the internship in Australia was an unforgettable experience that helped me grow enormously, both professionally and personally. I can warmly recommend taking this step with SGA to anyone thinking about doing an internship abroad.
