Nele’s experience report shows how a psychology internship in Valencia can combine professional development, international experience, and personal growth. From gaining insights into clinical psychology to enjoying life in one of Spain’s most vibrant cities, she shares why Valencia was the perfect place for her internship abroad.
I completed an Erasmus internship in Valencia. I am studying for a Master of Science in Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy. As part of my studies and before entering professional life, I consciously decided to gain further international experience in Spain through a psychology internship.
My biggest dream was to spend some time abroad in Spain once again after completing my studies and before starting my professional career. The offer of a psychology internship from “Students Go Abroad” seemed to be the perfect opportunity for this.
After receiving acceptance for a three-month internship, I was referred to the Spanish partner organization and language school in Valencia. They arranged a shared apartment room for me as well as five Spanish language courses. In my accommodation, contact with my flatmates was open and supportive, especially during shared meals. The location in Valencia’s city center was very convenient for me, as it allowed me to reach everything quickly.
Learning progress on a professional, linguistic, and personal level
My internship placement was an outpatient neuropsychological therapy center. There, patients of various age groups and with different diagnosed psychological disorders were treated. Patients with Alzheimer’s dementia attended neurocognitive training sessions aimed at maintaining or improving attention, concentration, and memory through everyday-related tasks. For children and adolescents diagnosed with psychological disorders such as ADHD or autism spectrum disorders, the center offered homework support as well as individual counseling on more effective learning at school.
I supported the treatment team in both group sessions and individual appointments. I particularly appreciated the wide range of therapies for different disorders and age groups, which I was able to get to know from a professional perspective.
Leisure time in Valencia, a city surrounded by nature
The host organization organized many excursions for interns and students, which I often joined. On weekends, there were hikes, beach trips, and city tours, for example to Morella, Peñíscola, Mascarat, Altea, Benidorm, Guadalest, and Alicante. In Valencia, I often visited the central market hall to enjoy regional products. I also liked going to Malvarrosa Beach and taking walks through the city center.
I was especially impressed by the weekly fireworks on the town hall square during the Christmas season, as well as the procession of the Three Wise Men. I experienced Valencia as a very green city, where it is easy to quickly reach a park or the beach. Thanks to the many leisure opportunities and the extensive public transport network, I felt very comfortable there. Overall, the city was perfect for my three-month internship, which is why I would 100% recommend this stay.
