READING TIME: 4 minutes
Completing an internship in Australia offers the perfect combination of professional experience and unforgettable travel adventures. In this internship report, Tom shares his experience of completing a controlling internship in Sydney, working in an Australian company, and exploring life in one of the world’s most vibrant cities. Learn how he prepared for his internship abroad, what his daily work looked like, and what he discovered while living and traveling across Australia.
For a long time, I had the desire to travel to the United States and complete an internship abroad there. However, during my research I came across an exciting opportunity in Australia through StudentsGoAbroad. Despite my original plans, Sydney immediately caught my interest. After a short period of consideration, I decided to take this opportunity and complete my controlling internship at an Australian bakery. Today, I am extremely happy about this decision, as it combined professional experience, personal development, and an unforgettable time on the other side of the world.
Arrival and First Days in Sydney
Before my internship began, I spent a few days in the city center. I stayed at a hotel near Darling Harbour and used the time to explore well-known sights such as the Sydney Opera House and the Harbour Bridge. These first days helped me adjust to life in Australia and experience the atmosphere of the city.
Living in Kogarah
After my stay at the hotel, I moved into an apartment in Kogarah, a suburb located in the south of Sydney. I lived there for four months and commuted to my workplace every day. The area was pleasant and had good connections to the city center. This allowed me to quickly find my rhythm between work, leisure time, and everyday life in Australia.
Controlling Internship at the Bakery
At the bakery, I worked in the areas of controlling and administration. My tasks included cost and revenue analysis, preparing monthly reports, and conducting price comparisons. I also worked with Excel and accounting software, checked incoming invoices, assisted with budget planning, and carried out smaller inventory checks. The close collaboration with the purchasing, production, and sales departments was particularly interesting. Through this, I learned how diverse controlling can be in a food production business. Another great advantage was the free meals during the workday – fresh bread, filled sandwiches, and pastries were part of my daily routine.
Leisure Time and Experiences during my internship in Australia
In my free time, I explored numerous beaches and fully enjoyed the Australian summer. Bondi, Coogee, and Manly Beach especially impressed me again and again with their relaxed atmosphere and clear water. I also went on smaller trips, for example to the Blue Mountains, which are only a few hours from Sydney and offer breathtaking viewpoints and hiking trails. After finishing my internship, I also traveled to Cairns in the tropical north, where I visited the Great Barrier Reef, as well as to Melbourne to get to know the southern part of the country. These trips perfectly completed my Australia experience. Looking back, my time there was not only an important professional step but also a formative personal experience that broadened my perspective on work and life.
