Funding Opportunities for Internship Abroad
Especially a long-term stay abroad, such as an internship abroad, is often associated with many costs. For financial support there are various funding possibilities. In order to help you, we have put together some links about scholarships and support programmes. Inform yourself early enough about the programs and apply in time, so that you know early enough how much financial support is available and how much money you have to tax yourself.
First Step for All Students
Contact the International Office at your university/college for information and detailed advice on internal and subject-specific funding opportunities. In general, every university has certain funds available to provide support for students during an internship or semester abroad.
Promotion of traineeships within Europe with Erasmus+
The Erasmus+ program pursues the objective of education and training. For more than 25 years, the European Commission has been providing effective support for traineeships in 34 participating countries. Support is available for internships abroad in Europe from 2 months to 8 months. Some universities also limit the funding to a duration of 3 months. Whether this is a voluntary or compulsory internship is irrelevant. Even after completion of the studies, support is possible. As a scholarship holder, you do not pay any tuition fees under the Erasmus+ program.
What is the level of support from Erasmus +
The amount of funding depends on which project group your internship country is in. Ask at your university which project (i.e. 2017, 2018 or 2019) the funding would come from. In Project 2019, a monthly grant of 555 euros is currently available for an internship abroad in England and Ireland, and a monthly grant of 495 euros for internships abroad in Spain or Portugal.
Erasmus + in brief
for internships from 2 to 8 months
for students from 19 to 30 years
up to 555 Euro monthly grant (depending on the country of internship)
Tuition fees are waived for the internship period
available for all nationalities, except Switzerland (see SEMP program)
Study progress: usually 2nd semester (Bachelor)
Promotion of Swiss people through SEMP (Swiss European Mobility Program)
The SEMP programme is the equivalent of the Erasmus + programme for Swiss nationals. The scholarship can be applied for a study abroad of up to 12 months as well as for an internship abroad in other European countries of up to 3 months. Depending on the university, this period can also be longer. The monthly grant amounts to approximately 440 CHF.
Please note that also for the SEMP program the amount, the requirements and the maximum duration of the internship vary between the universities in Switzerland.
BAföG- Support for Stays Abroad
BAföG can support internships abroad with a minimum duration of 3 months. The chance of receiving support is quite high, especially if you already receive Bafög in Germany. However, if you do not receive support in Germany because your parents' income is above the limit, you should still start an application. The amount of the foreign subsidy is made up of different criteria and is different for everyone.
In contrast to the EURASMUS+ programme, which can only be applied for from the 2nd semester onwards, BAföG support can also be applied for before the studies. The prerequisite for this is that the internship abroad is a prerequisite for your course of study and meets the requirements of the university.
DAAD Funding Opportunities
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) supports stays abroad with scholarships. The different types of scholarships offered by the DAAD vary according to duration, the field of study, and the respective country, which students, interns, graduates, artists, scientists, and doctoral candidates can choose freely.
PROMOS
The Promos program is not only for internships abroad but also for semesters abroad, inside or outside the EU! Your project can be supported by up to 500€ per month. Check with the International Office at your university to see if funding from the PROMOS program is available.
RISE
The DAAD's RISE program supports research internships of no more than 3 months duration at universities and research institutions. However, only Bachelor students in the natural, life, and engineering sciences are eligible for this program.

Fulbright Funding Initiatives
Although the Fulbright Program is one of the largest exchange programs for study projects in the USA, this also applies to a combined stay of one semester and a subsequent internship abroad. The prerequisite for this is that you are at least in your third semester (FH) or fourth semester (university). If you are a graduate, however, you must not have graduated more than one year ago. In addition, good English language skills and a high level of general knowledge about Germany and the USA are important for the interview before the Fulbright Commission in Berlin.
