Many students dream of gaining international experience, improving their English skills, and discovering a new culture while taking their first professional steps. That’s exactly what Anna Lena set out to do. She travelled to Ireland for a marketing and communications internship—and found not only an exciting role in a Dublin media company, but also a deep appreciation for Irish culture and everyday life. In her report, she shares her favourite moments, the professional insights she gained, and why she recommends an internship in Ireland to everyone.

I decided to do an internship in Ireland because I wanted to gain international experience and improve my English. I am currently studying International Business Administration and would like to specialize in marketing. Therefore, my goal was to complete an internship in the field of marketing and communications. I was lucky enough to be accepted by a media company based in Dublin after my very first interview.

The start to my Ireland adventure

When I arrived in Ireland, I stayed with a host family. During the week, I worked full-time, and on weekends I used my free time to go on trips and meet other “Study Abroad” participants. The WhatsApp group organized by the local partner in Dublin was very helpful for that. I loved connecting with others and met many wonderful people. I went on several trips, for example to the Cliffs of Moher, the Giant’s Causeway, and many other places. Together with my friends, I also had the chance to explore Dublin in depth.

Dublin is an exciting city, and Ireland has an incredible amount of history and culture to offer. I visited several famine museums, attended an Irish dance show, and listened to fascinating—and sometimes spooky—stories about leprechauns. My time in Ireland allowed me to truly get to know a country I had never been to before, in a way that a regular vacation simply can’t provide.

More than just an internship

Professionally, I also learned a great deal. The team welcomed me warmly and gave me many valuable tips for my future career. I learned a lot about marketing and social media and was very well integrated into the team. I was treated as a full team member and was able to contribute to all areas of work. The marketing team in particular was very close-knit, and I really enjoyed spending time with my colleagues. It was also especially exciting to gain insight into different parts of the company—events, magazines and journalism, and award ceremonies. This experience sparked my interest in event management, an area I hadn’t been exposed to before.

I would truly recommend this experience to anyone, as I was able to grow tremendously—both professionally and personally. I learned so much, became more confident, and gained a new sense of self-assurance through this internship.
