Student Berit completed a four-month internship at a community radio station in Dublin and had an unforgettable time. In her experience report, she shares insights into her exciting tasks in radio broadcasting, the warm Irish hospitality, memorable moments with her fellow interns, and her incredible travels across Ireland.

From September to Christmas, I lived in Dublin and worked at a community radio station. During my internship, I recorded shows, edited interviews, and managed the technical controls for live broadcasts. I also contributed significantly to the station’s social media presence. The station is located in Smithfield, right in the heart of Dublin, and we often traveled to other parts of the city for press releases and events. I met two amazing Irish interns, and we frequently spent time together after work.

Irish Hospitality & Life in Dublin

The pub culture was one of the aspects that fascinated me most about Ireland. I also experienced the hospitality of the Irish in my host family. I lived a bit outside the city, but thanks to the tram, I was well connected. My host family had quite a few rules to ensure smooth cohabitation, but we had a great time together once I got used to them. Besides me, there were always two other international students, and we often sat together over pizza or Irish coffee, sometimes joined by other family members or neighbors. Something was always going on in our house, which allowed me to get to know the Irish people truly.

Weekend Trips & Unforgettable Irish Adventures

On weekends, I often took bus trips, allowing me to visit Galway, the Cliffs of Moher, Kilkenny, Glendalough, and the Wicklow Mountains without needing a car. When my family visited, we traveled together to Connemara, through Killarney, along the Ring of Kerry. I highly recommend the latter—Kerry is known as the most beautiful county in Ireland for a reason.

With a French friend I met through the Irish partner organization, I took an extended weekend trip to Northern Ireland. A two-hour bus ride from Dublin takes you directly to Belfast without any border controls. From there, we visited Derry, where we particularly enjoyed the charming Craft Village and the exhibition on the Netflix series Derry Girls. One of my most memorable experiences in Ireland was a walking history tour led by a man who had lived through Bloody Sunday and had a story to tell about every street corner.

I am very happy with StudentsGoAbroad! My contact person, Katharina, always responded quickly and found the perfect placement for me.

These four months showed me a diverse and exciting side of Ireland that I had never expected. Through my internship, I learned a lot about Irish culture and society, as well as technical skills that will certainly benefit me in my future career.
