In the footstep of Darwin – Ecuador's Galápagos Islands
Even Charles Darwin chose the Galapagos Islands. The world famous archipelago of about 1,000 km from the Ecuadorian mainland is the perfect location for scientific work. Many researchers refer to this isolated island as a "living museum", as the diverse and unique flora and fauna has remained undisturbed for many years. There lives the only lizard that, like you and me, likes to treat itself to a dip in the sea.

"Spending one month in The Capital of Ecuador to volunteer in a social project with children, I began the adventure of my life."
Program Information
Provide Social Work
Lend a helping hand to one of the day care centers in the capital of Ecuador, taking care of children from socially disadvantaged families. There are a total of three facilities of this kind in Quito where volunteers can assist the caregivers in charge of early childcare and preschool education. A particularly extraordinary social project involves work in nursing homes where the village elders are cared for, and where there are plenty of exciting stories to be shared. Also in need of assistance, are the following institutions:
a kindergarten in the South of Quito
a Children's home in the South of Quito, which was built to provide street children free food and education and keep the children off the streets and away from child labor.
Teaching Projects
Making education accessible for children is the great motivation of many schools. Here there is a special focus on teaching English, as this language opens the door to a wide range of opportunities for the children. Volunteers will support local teachers, bringing new ideas and knowledge to enhance their lessons. Some other projects involve teaching English and physical education in a sluggish fishing community or there are other educational programs in the Ecuadorian jungle.
See the Galápagos with different eyes
There are a plenty of opportunities to get closer to Galápagos habitants. Talking about habitats, we not necessarily mean the species, which make those islands worth knowing. Especially Santa Cruz and San Cristóbal, are not only the biggest island in the Galápagos, but due to a high influx of tourists all-year-round they are the most populated. Get to know the people of the famous Galápagos islands. In different schools, kindergarten and day-care center in Santa Cruz for example, you can help to bring more influence of the English language to its students by:
teaching
preparing tasks for the children
assisting in English
drawing and music lessons
creating recreational opportunities
helping to repair the classrooms
Get close up with Ecuador's wildlife
San Cristóbal is the easternmost of the Galapagos Islands and, archaeologically, the oldest. This island hosts frigate birds, sea lions, giant tortoises, blue-and red-footed boobies, tropical birds, marine iguanas, dolphins and swallow-tailed gulls. The aim of the animal conservation program in San Cristóbal is to conserve biological diversity and the unique natural resources of the island of San Cristóbal, while promoting the development of these populations through research and the education of locals and visitors. There are other conservation projects on Santa Cruz as well.
Building & Community Projects
Guayaquil is the economic center of Ecuador. Most of national import and export is processed here at Ecuador's biggest, hectic and noisy port. You will find a much slower pace in the traditional fishing villages of Guaya and Manabi – idyllic mangrove swamps, small colorful fishing cutter and sandy beaches. It is here, where volunteers can contribute to the preservation of the natural balance, but also give direct support to the people of the village itself.
Education: Assist as an English teacher in schools
Construction: provide assistance in the construction and renovation project
Environmental protection: Many local bird species are home to the mangrove swamps, which need to be preserved.
"Back to Basics" says the jungle community in Napo province, which is located in the east of Ecuador between coffee, cocoa, and banana plantations. Laying trails, help gather fruit at harvest time or paint the schools in with lively colors. These could be some of your daily responsibilities – a true adventure.
