CATEGORY: Internship abroad - Teaching
COUNTRY: Indonesia
READING TIME: 5 minutes
Bali through the eyes of an intern. In this 11-part series of reports, our intern Nicky tells you about her internship time on the Indonesian island of Bali. In this report, she gives you important tips on preparing for your trip to Bali.
One report is obviously not enough to share my unforgettable experiences in Bali... Here is more of my adventure!
The Beginning of the Weekend Trip
...I met an Italian girl at the end of the week through two friends. I arranged to take her out of Jimbaran for the weekend to do something. In the end, it turned out that we arranged to meet three people from her hostel for a trip. The destination was one of the waterfalls in the north. Five of us and with three scooters we started early Saturday morning. One of the two boys has been spending the winter in Bali for several years and knows his way around so well that he set the route. Near Kuta we had a little breakfast break, or rather lunch for Europeans: as usual, there was rice with various toppings. The route to our destination led through Ubud, the Yoga center of Bali, which became famous through the movie Eat, Pray, Love, and the rice terraces typical for Bali.

The Abandoned Hotel
After that, we went further north, into the mountains. As we had our own personal guide with us, so to speak, we made another stop at the next not too well-known sight. Tip: This was the abandoned hotel "Taman Rekreasi Bedugul", which is also called Ghost Palace Hotel. The hotel is located in the area of Bedugul, approx. 50 km north of Kuta. To get to the hotel you have to climb over a small barrier at the entrance (forbidden!). When we wanted to do this, a local person got in our way. However, after we offered him some money so that we may take a few photos, suddenly everything was no more problem at all.
The story about the abandoned hotel is a bit mystical. Nobody knows exactly why the hotel was - as it suddenly seems - abandoned and for inexplicable reasons never opened. The Balinese have various rumors about this. Many are in the belief that ghosts are now making trouble there.

A Slightly Longer Break
After the small photo shooting we went on, but we did not get far. It started to rain very hard and became increasingly cooler since we were already in the middle of the volcanic area of Bali.
With this rain, it was not possible to continue the trip. So we looked for shelter at the nearest restaurant. The view we had there was overwhelming despite the dark sky...to be continued!
