Julia’s Teaching Internship in Ireland – Preschool Life, Host Family & Coastal Adventures
CATEGORY: Internship - Teaching
COUNTRY: Ireland
READING TIME: 4 minutes
As part of her teacher training, Julia spent nine weeks in Dublin with the help of StudentsGoAbroad. Working as a childcare assistant in a local preschool, she gained insight into Ireland’s early education system and found joy in daily routines, Montessori methods, and a warm team environment. In this report, she shares why this internship became one of her most valuable personal and professional experiences.
My nine-week stay abroad, which I completed in Dublin from March to May 2025 as part of my teacher training program with StudentsGoAbroad, was a positive and enriching experience that I can wholeheartedly recommend. I had the opportunity to work as a childcare assistant in a preschool – a role that I not only thoroughly enjoyed but that also gave me valuable insights into the Irish preschool system. This allowed me to draw comparisons with the German education system, which I found highly rewarding.
The structure of my teaching internship
From Monday to Friday, I supported the local team in caring for the children and was assigned to a specific class. The work was incredibly interesting and varied – at the same time demanding and fulfilling. I particularly appreciated the focus on early childhood education and the structured daily routine, which also included the use of Montessori materials as a regular part of the curriculum. I was warmly welcomed, introduced to the various areas of responsibility, and quickly felt like a valued member of the team.
I was accommodated by an Irish host, with whom I felt very well taken care of and at home from the beginning. Interacting with her and her family gave me the chance to get a close look at Irish culture and way of life. Thanks to her, I discovered many things linguistically and culinary-wise, and I always had someone to talk to – whether it was for questions or travel tips.
Exploring the nature of Ireland
I used the weekends to explore the diversity of Ireland. Thanks to the well-developed public transport system, traveling was easy and convenient, and my Unlimited Travel Card allowed me to get from A to B at any time. Whether it was cliff walks on the west coast and the Cliffs of Moher, breathtaking mountain slopes in the Wicklow Mountains, a day trip to Galway or Sligo, or a visit to the picturesque town of Howth – Ireland has so much natural beauty to offer and, due to its manageable size, is perfect for day trips. Dublin itself is a vibrant, bustling, culturally diverse city with a fascinating history that comes alive on walking tours through its districts.
The entire organization of my stay by SGA was absolutely smooth. From the placement of the internship to all logistical matters and local contacts, everything was perfectly arranged. This allowed me to fully focus on my work and discovering the country – which made it easier for me to step out of my comfort zone.
Conclusion after nine amazing weeks in Dublin
In conclusion, this stay abroad in Ireland was a valuable personal and professional experience in which I also learned a lot about myself. I can wholeheartedly recommend taking this step – Ireland is a hospitable, beautiful, green country with an open culture and many opportunities for personal development. - Slán go fóill, Éire!
