Lea's internship as a primary school teacher: Six weeks in Singapore

CATEGORY: Teaching internship

COUNTRY: Singapore

READING TIME: 4 minutes

Lea completed a six-week teaching internship with us in Singapore. She taught English to Chinese primary school students, gaining valuable practical experience while learning about a new education system. From settling into Singapore's structured school life to exploring the city's cultural diversity, she shares her experiences with you in the blog.

In the summer of 2024, I embarked on a six-week internship in Singapore through Students Go Abroad. From the very start, I felt well-supported by the organization, which made adjusting to life and work in Singapore much smoother. The easy communication and willingness to assist with any questions or challenges were invaluable.

During my internship, I taught English to Chinese students. As a future primary school teacher with English as one of my subjects, this opportunity was perfect for applying my theoretical knowledge in a real-world setting while exploring a different educational system. It was fascinating to witness how classrooms in Singapore are structured and to compare their methods with those used in Germany.

My internship in Singapore

At first, adapting to the different work environment was a bit of a challenge. School life in Singapore is more structured, with a strong emphasis on discipline. It took some patience to grasp the dynamics and adjust to the cultural differences in the classroom. But over time, I grew more comfortable, finding ways to support the students that were both effective and meaningful for them. It was incredibly rewarding to see how they made progress in English and applied what they had learned.

What I learned from my internship abroad

This internship was not just a professional opportunity but a personal journey as well. It helped me grow as a future teacher, particularly in the areas of intercultural exchange and adapting to various teaching methods. I highly recommend Students Go Abroad to anyone considering an international internship. My time in Singapore gave me valuable insights into the teaching profession and introduced me to a rich, diverse culture.

Singapore, an unforgettable experience

Beyond the professional experience, Singapore’s cultural diversity was a highlight. The blend of Malay, Chinese, and Indian influences is visible everywhere, and it was amazing to experience this multiculturalism in daily life. In my free time, I visited iconic places like Gardens by the Bay, Chinatown, and Little India. These adventures made my stay even more unforgettable and sparked a desire to continue exploring the world and discovering new cultures.
