Internship Abroad in Spain: The FAQs

The internships in Spain are generally not remunerated.

If you are a European citizen, you do not need a visa for Spain. Applicants of other nationalities should contact the Spanish Embassy in their home country.

Students who go abroad for a semester are insured by the German health insurance company as long as they are enrolled at the university. For a longer internship stay, however, you should inform yourself about special international health insurance. We have had a good experience with the ADAC or StaTravel.

Basically, the average cost of living in Spain is about 15% lower than in Germany, although the level of the big cities like Barcelona and Seville hardly differs from the level of other European cities. Of course, it all depends on your own lifestyle.

You can withdraw money with your German EC card at all cash dispensers without any problems. The fees for this depend on your bank. Normally they are between 2 and 5 €. Withdrawing money with a VISA credit card from DKB is even free of charge.

Spain is a very popular tourist destination, not least because of its climate. Barcelona is located in a Mediterranean climate zone and the summers are usually very warm and humid. The average temperatures are already in May at 21 degrees. The winters are mild but rainy. Seville is one of the hottest cities in Europe with an average of 300 days of sunshine per year. Even in winter, temperatures rarely drop below the freezing point.

Basically you do not need any special vaccinations. The normal vaccinations like tetanus, Diptheria, and hepatitis should always be available.

You can use your German mobile phone and your German card in Spain. But keep in mind that for every call the so-called roaming charges apply. You can find out about these from your mobile phone provider. For longer stays in Spain, we recommend buying a Spanish prepaid card. These are available from various Spanish mobile phone companies, e.g. Vodafone, Movistar, or Armenia.

Public transport in Barcelona is good and cheap and you can easily get to work by bus or metro. During rush hour they run every 2 to 5 minutes. Also in Sevilla, using public transport is the cheapest and most comfortable way to get to work.

Barcelona offers besides the obligatory sightseeing, great cultural nightlife, and beautiful beaches, also a lot of gyms and parks to do sports. Sevilla is in no way inferior to this.
