Why an Internship in the USA Is Worth Every Penny!
A study by the "International Education and Career Alliance" has now provided figures on how an internship in the USA has a positive effect on various aspects of your life and career - even years after the internship!
Plus Point for Your Personal Development
Above all, being an intern in the United States affects your personal development. The majority of respondents said so, in fact, 97% said that the internship made them more mature. 96% felt increased self-confidence and 89% said that the internship had enabled them to deal better with conflicts and uncertainties. The clear majority (95%) also found that an internship in the United States has a long-lasting impact on their worldview.
Friends for Life
In addition, many long-term friendships are made during the internship stay. Be it with other interns, work colleagues or other people you met during this time. More than half of those surveyed are still in contact with friends from the United States. 73% said that this experience still affects them when making family planning decisions.
Strengthening Your Intercultural Skills
Furthermore, an internship abroad in the USA also contributes to the intercultural development of interns. Because 98% of all participants stated in the study that the internship enabled them to understand their own cultural values and prejudices better. 82% said that their internship abroad helped to look at the world in a more progressive and differentiated way.
It is clearly recognizable that the intercultural skills still influence the life of the interns afterward. Almost all respondents (94%) reported their experiences, which they still influence when talking to people from different cultural backgrounds. Due to the many friendships that the interns made in the United States, 90% said that this period of their life had affected them to the extent that they are now looking for greater diversity in friends. In contrast, 64% have been interested in getting to know many other cultures since their internship abroad.
Deciding Your "What Now"
It is also noteworthy that 87% of all participants indicated that an internship in the United States affected their professional development when asked about their academic work. In addition, 63% and 64% reported that their decisions to expand their career goals and participate in graduate school were strongly influenced by the internship abroad. Since completing the internship in the United States, almost half of all respondents have been involved in international social work or in a volunteer project.
To advance your career, it is essential to complete an international internship, as many results of the study show. It is also noteworthy that 70% of the study participants commented positively that after an internship in the USA their interest was directed in a certain career direction. For 83% of those questioned, the acquisition of certain skills during the internship influenced their careers.
Working as an intern in the United States will benefit from the experience gained for a lifetime, as the study shows. These experiences have positive and long-lasting academic, intercultural, personal and social benefits that you can benefit from in your career. If you want to make career decisions, you should always keep in mind the benefits that come with doing an internship in the United States.
