Auckland - The City of Sails

Unfortunately, three months were almost not enough to see everything from New Zealand, even though we have seen a lot. Luckily, we bought a car after the first wee to explore New Zealand on our own. We thought this was more comfortable than just accepting planned offers and after our three months, we also were able to sell it again.

The Ultimate Must-Sees

Toi o Tamaki Art Gallery

The art gallery Toi o Tamaki was built in 1888 and is the largest art institution in New Zealand today. Its exhibition contains 12500 works, some of those dating back to 1376. You can view early Maori portraits and landscapes as well as contemporary art from New Zealand.

Dolphin and Whale Safari

The Hauraki Gulf is considered one of the richest habitats for marine mammals in the world: 22 different dolphin and whale species have been found there. See those live in their natural environment on a dolphin and whale safari. Daily departure from the Viaduct Harbour.

Devonport

Devonport is a historic seaside village with a lot of charm and a relaxed atmosphere. Discover many small art galleries, cafés or historical Maori sites while strolling around the village. Getting to Devonport is a great experience in itself - you can drive over the Harbour Bridge or take a ferry there.

Auckland Zoo

Enjoy a day at the zoo and experience giraffes, rhinos, zebras and the unique New Zealand coastal habitat. You can even get up close to your favorite animals on one of the Zoom tours the zoo offers! You can book online on the Zoo's website.

Kawau Island

Kawau Island is situated 8 km off the coast and 45 km north of Auckland. It is a popular destination for tourists and locals. You can go swimming, fishing or discover the exotic flora and fauna on the island. Other highlights of the island are the historic mansion of the first Governor of New Zealand Sir George Grey and old copper mines.

One Tree Hill

Maungakiekie means "mountain of kiekie" (a plant which was traditionally used to make baskets and mats) and it is thought to have been one of the biggest New Zealand pas (Maori fortification). You can still find evidence of the pa on the volcanic cone known as One Tree Hill. During spring the hill is blanketed in daffodils and people enjoy long strolls or picnics.

Sky Tower Auckland

All three observation decks of the Sky Tower offer a great view of Auckland. The tower is 328 meters high and offers next to 360-degree views of the city, also adventure. You can bungee jump or walk around the outside perimeter with SkyWalk.

Snow Planet

Snowplanet is the only indoor snow resort in the Southern hemisphere! Powder snow, 3 lifts, separate areas for snowboarders and learners make it worth a visit all year round. All equipment and gear can be rented and it's only 20 minutes north of Auckland.

Rain Forest Express

Take a trip through the rain forest! The narrow-gauged railway takes you right into the heart of Waitakere Ranges over wooden bridges and through tunnels. The trains used to be run for building and maintaining the Upper Nihotupu, Waitakere and Upper Huia dams. You need to book in advance!

Kelly Tarlton’s Antarctic Encounter & Underwater World

Experience a wonder world of snow, ice, and underwater sights. Travel through an Antarctic world in which you can see penguin colonies play in real ice and snow. Follow the glass tunnel deep below the ocean and come face to face with sharks and other creatures of the sea. You can even swim with stingrays in the Stingray Bay or with sharks in the shark tank - you just have to be brave enough!
