Hospitality Internship in the Heart of Barcelona - What a Beauty!

The First Days
I completed my 3-month internship in the heart of Barcelona in a beautiful 5-star design hotel, which is located on the Via Laietana. Before my first day at work, I was quite nervous because my Spanish wasn't the best, but I soon realized that Barcelona is very international and so I got on with English in the beginning.
In the hotel, my working area was the reception. Already on my second day, I was in the middle of the action, I should take a close look at the work steps of my colleagues so that I could work alone as soon as possible. During the check-in, each guest was offered a drink at the reception by the concierge, then it was about the personal data, afterward, all highlights of the hotel were explained, and last but not least, each guest was personally accompanied to the room. The highlight of our hotel is the gastronomy area, which consists of the Gastrobar, the Saüc Restaurant with one star, and the Boutique Cocktail Bar, which according to the New York Times is one of the 50 best in the world. The most beautiful part of the hotel is the roof terrace with a glass swimming pool. This is where I liked best, the guests could look over the whole of Barcelona, swim or just have a drink.

My Part in the Hotel
After the first week of training, I was allowed to check-in and out at my own work and take over reservations. So after a very short time, I was a full-time employee. As in a hotel, the different areas are closely connected to each other, it could also happen that I had to help the concierge or the accounting department, so I could look into other areas at the same time. I worked 5 days a week, 8 hours each. My shifts varied from 12 o'clock to 20 o'clock, from 07 o'clock-15 o'clock or 15 o'clock to 23 o'clock. The working atmosphere was great, the colleagues gave me a warm welcome and we always had a lot of fun together despite the work, and there were also several interns in the hotel next to me. All in all, I can say that working in a luxury hotel is a very exciting experience, great to improve your language skills - because you have contact with people from all over the world - and very diversified.
Free Time in Barcelona
Besides work, I also had 2 days off every week, which I used to go to the beach and do something with my friends.
I lived in a great flatshare with 2 other girls in a great neighborhood called Poble Sec, I could reach everything very well by foot, if it should be further away the metro was 5 minutes away from the apartment.
With my friends I met in Barcelona I went to eat at least once a week in one of the many great restaurants. Very recommendable is the "Rosa Negra" a Mexican restaurant at the Via Laietana, "100 Montadidos" a tapas restaurant where on Wednesdays and Sundays everything costs only one Euro and the best pizza is available at "Pizza del Sortidor" at the Career Blasco de Garay 48, a MUST go there!
Besides all the food we have of course also done a lot in summer, we were often at the beach which is really nice and mostly very crowded. But also typical sights, like the Sagrada Familia, the Park Güell, las Ramblas, the port, the Montjuic, and much more were on the program. On the Montjuic I always liked best, from there you can look over the whole of Barcelona and the sea and early in the morning you will not meet any tourists. If you like to go jogging, the park Ciutadella is the perfect place.
Barcelona also offers an exciting nightlife, at the beach, there are all the big discos with nice outdoor places to the seaside, as for example, the Opium, the Chocolate or also the Carpe Diem, which is a great experience with its Arabian flair. But also in the whole of Barcelona there are many discos in the different districts that have their own charm and are not full of tourists.
Barcelona is also very suitable for simply having a drink in the evening, very recommendable is the Irish Pub at Placa Urquinaona 5.

My Conclusion
But in order to get a real picture of Barcelona, you simply have to experience it, this city is so multifaceted, colorful, lovable, loud and exciting that it is hard to summarize everything in one text. I had an incredibly great time with new friends, who are very dear to my heart, with whom one could do something different every day. I will really miss Barcelona and the constant hustle and bustle in such a great city. It was one of the best experiences I have had so far and I will come back as soon as I can.
