About this position

Would you like to revive the history of one of the most famous cities in the world and to participate in activities for the common good and animal welfare? Together with like-minded people, you will engage in the social and cultural well-being of the local community and become part of one of the most exciting organizations in Mexico.

Cultural Restoration and Social Activation

Join a team dedicated to restoring the history of one of the most visited cities in the world! All of our programs in Mexico focus on addressing and transforming social and environmental conflicts. They are a perfect initiative for volunteers who want to contribute to social change and conservation. Immerse yourself in an exciting culture and develop social conflict management skills while improving and strengthening your overall communication skills.

The program

The main objective of this exceptional volunteer program is the social integration of different generations through various cultural and recreational activities, as well as educational and occupational therapy activities and interventions. The community center, located at one of the most important pilgrimage sites on the continent, provides opportunities for the elderly, youth, and children to learn from, inspire, and support each other. The diverse needs and problems of Chalma are significant, but countless solutions are communicated and promoted together with the local team. In this way, you'll work with local partners to promote social change and help address one of the city's biggest challenges: The care of abandoned dogs. Many dogs accompany pilgrims, taking them in as they pass through the town and leaving them behind at the end of their journey. Thus, every year dozens of new dogs arrive in Chalma, which poses significant problems for the local population, who need more capacity to receive and feed all the dogs.

Furthermore, the community center documents the history, culture, and traditions of Chalma through photographs, drone videos, and interviews. It organizes the International Folklore Festival, which will be held for the fifth time in 2023. This project aims to promote the well-being of the community and the city, a well-known tourist center with multiple needs. So there is a lot to discover, and all volunteers are welcome to support all projects actively!

It is always very convenient to arrive a few days before the start of the project. This way you avoid stress and working with jet lag. As soon as our local partner has your travel details, they will arrange your accommodation and you can move in with a host family up to three days before the start of the project at no extra cost. You will then have enough time to recover from your journey and make your first excursions to get to know your surroundings. You can acclimatise in peace and get to know your host family and the country and its people.

For our projects in Malinalco, Mezquital Valley and Chalma, we recommend Mexico City International Airport as your arrival airport. From there, our partner will organise your airport pick-up and transport to your accommodation. The details can also be arranged with our local partner. Once you arrive at the project location, we recommend that you first recover from the long flight. Take the time you need to let all the impressions sink in and get over the jet lag, and if you cannot find a flight on the desired date, it is advisable to arrive a day earlier than planned.

To avoid a culture shock, you will receive a cultural briefing from your local contact either directly after your arrival or before your first day of work. You will be informed about the country and its people, cultural particularities and important do's and don'ts. You will also receive insider tips to help you get started in a new lifestyle. It will also make it easier for you to communicate with the locals. Incidentally, your volunteering programme includes a language course, which will also help you settle in.

The weekend is generally yours. Simply ask your local contact person about events, sights, shopping tips or other must-sees. In some cases, our partner will also organise excursions for all volunteers, which you can of course take part in. They also offer adventure packages. Simply ask him on site what you would like to do. Otherwise, you can plan excursions to the surrounding area individually and organise your free time in a colourful way.
